State Minimum Wages

Note: Thirty eight states and the District of Columbia have minimum wage rates higher than the Federal minimum wage. If your state's minimum wage rate differs from the federal rate, then the employer must pay the higher of the two rates.

Minimum Wage Scheduled to Increase

May 25, 2007: President Bush signed quietly into law the first increase of the US minimum wage since 1997. Presented to the President as part of the Iraq War Supplemental, the legislation will raise the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour over two years.

The federal minimum hourly rate is $5.85 per hour effective July 24, 2007; rising to $6.55 per hour effective July 24, 2008; and to $7.25 per hour effective July 24, 2009.
